Executive coaching frequently asked questions

Clear answers to help you understand the engagement, choose a coach, and evaluate an executive or leadership coaching program.

What is the difference between executive and leadership coaching, consulting, and mentoring?

Executive and leadership coaching is a tailored partnership for executives, senior leaders, and leaders in transition. In a confidential space, you step back, strengthen your leadership presence, and work through real business challenges.

  • Consulting: an expert proposes solutions and helps build action plans.
  • Mentoring: an experienced person shares knowledge and perspective from a specific field.
  • Coaching: a structured space where you clarify challenges, develop your own solutions, and put them into practice.

I work with leaders who want to strengthen their leadership, navigate a new role or transformation, and achieve concrete results.

What should I look for when choosing an executive coach?

Choosing an executive coach comes down to trust, credibility, and personal fit. Check three things:

  • ICF certification: a globally recognized benchmark that reflects rigorous training, adherence to a code of ethics, and continued professional development.
  • Experience and references: the coach should understand the realities of senior leaders and have a verifiable background and testimonials.
  • Personal fit: you should feel both safe and challenged. A good coach helps you move forward from the first conversation.
Are coaching sessions confidential if my company is paying?

Yes. The content of each coaching session remains strictly confidential between the coachee and the coach.

When the company acts as the sponsor, such as HR or the manager, triad meetings are used only to share coaching objectives, overall progress, and any necessary adjustments to the engagement. Session content is never disclosed. Anything shared is agreed with the coachee in advance, in accordance with the ICF Code of Ethics and the agreement established at the outset.

How long does an executive coaching program last?

An executive coaching program typically lasts 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on the objectives and context. Coaching is not a quick fix: meaningful change requires concrete action, experimentation between sessions, and genuine engagement from the coachee.

My flagship program runs for 6 months and includes 24 hours of coaching, with weekly virtual sessions. Triad meetings with the coachee, manager or sponsor, and coach take place at the start, midpoint, and end to align objectives, review progress, and consolidate learning. The format remains flexible and is tailored to your needs.

Is executive or leadership coaching an expense or an investment?

Executive or leadership coaching is best evaluated as an investment in decision quality, performance, and readiness for change.

In the ICF/PwC Global Coaching Client Study, 86% of organizations that were able to calculate coaching ROI reported at least recouping their investment, with a reported median ROI of about seven times the initial investment. Beyond the numbers, the return is often visible in stronger leadership presence, better decisions, and greater readiness for the next transition.
